2009 WSA Single Lifts - Competition Report

8th November 2009 at the 4 Seasons Hotel, Llansamlet, Swansea.

Nice to see 20 lifters having a go at the single lifts competition, it was a mixture of experienced lifters and newcomers to the sport and the standard of lifting was very good.

We had 4 lifters going for the total and in the 67.5 class 15 yr old Liam "Rocky" Rees impressed us all with a 320 total and also winning the lee Kelly trophy for 2009. Josh keys in the 100 class again improved in all lifts for a fine 645 total at only 18 yrs of age, David Govier dropped out of the bench press but did a strong 250 deadlift. I

n the 125 class Ritchie Allen bombed on the bench but went on to do a great 300 deadlift, Dave Evans did the squat in the 125+ class and did an easy 270.

We had some very strong benchers on show and Paul Rees did a very strong 160 in the 82.5 class. Three lifters in the 90 class, with the honours going to Mathew Lewis with 165, closely followed by Peter Taylor with 160 and Lee Abbott with 140, all good benchers. Three lifters also in the 100 class, with top spot going to master lifter Colin Payne with an easy 160, Neil Harris was just 5kg behind with 155 and newcomer Mark Nightingale did well for 120.

On his own in the 110 class Chris Jones did a great 190 before picking up a pec injury, more impressive benching in the 125+ class with Rob Thomas pressing a great 265, just missing out on 280.

Onto the deadlift and we opened up with our one lady lifter Kim martin impressing with a strong 135, two lifters in the 90 class with Kristian Peters pulling a strong 250 and unequipped lifter David Ayres lifting an excellent 215. Geraint Nicholas won the 90 class with a great 270 and newcomer Richard Gilchrist pulled 190, just missing 205. On his own in the 110 class Gareth Jones did well after coming back from injury with a strong 250.
